The story behind the cards
In 2024, The Pokémon Company launched Pikachu's Indonesia Journey — a multi-city campaign born from a partnership with Garuda Indonesia Airlines. The campaign was conceived under the broader Pokémon Air Adventures framework, but adapted entirely for Indonesian culture and audiences.
At its heart was a simple but powerful idea: dress Pikachu in batik. Not a generic motif — but a carefully crafted series of five distinct batik patterns, each featuring a different Pokémon species woven into traditional Javanese design language.
"Batik is an art and tradition recognized in 2009 as part of Indonesia's Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO — and now, for the first time, it wears a Pikachu."
The campaign unfolded across Indonesian cities throughout 2024, with each location receiving an exclusive variant of the Pikachu Berkemeja Batik card. The cards were never distributed internationally and were not available through any online Pokémon store. The only way to obtain them was to be physically present at the events — or to source them from Indonesia afterward.
The campaign continues in 2025, with events confirmed in Palembang, Semarang, Bandung, Bekasi, and Medan — making this an ongoing series, not a one-time release.

Card technical specs
Pokédex entry (translated)
"It is said that when several Pikachu gather, tremendous electricity accumulates there and lightning can strike."
From Pokémon Violet, translated from Japanese into Indonesian. The only Pokédex entry version in Indonesian language — another element unique to this card series.
Cultural context
Batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique applied to cloth, originating from Java, Indonesia. In 2009, UNESCO added batik to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Each motif carries specific meaning — social status, spiritual protection, or ceremonial purpose. The Pokémon Company collaborated with batik artisans to create patterns that authentically blend Pokémon characters with traditional Javanese motif language.
The five motifs of the Indonesia Journey
Pikachu & Poké Ball
Circular forms echoing traditional kawung patterns, reinterpreted with Poké Balls. Chic and formal.
Xatu
The Mystic Pokémon woven into lively blue-green tones — colors associated with spirituality in Javanese tradition.
Staryu
Muted brown earth tones, the most classical batik palette. Staryu's bright red core creates a focal accent point.
Pikachu & Flowers
Inspired by Batik Pekalongan, known for vivid colors and floral abundance. Bright background, geometric florals.
Magikarp
White and orange dominate, reflecting Magikarp's colors. Wave elements create a dynamic, elegant design.
How batik is made — the 5 traditional steps
01
Diketeli
Soaking the base cloth overnight to ready it for wax application.
02
Nyanting
Tracing patterns. Covering the design with hot wax using a canting tool.
03
Nyelup
Dipping the cloth in dye liquid to set the colors.
04
Nglorod
Removing wax by washing in hot water mixed with soda ash solution.
05
Mepe
Drying the wet cloth under direct sunlight to fix colors.
